Providing physiotherapy support at multiple tennis events means it’s been a busy summer for Physioworks Health Group Physiotherapist Amy Shipperd.
As part of a team of highly experienced tennis physios Amy Shipperd was involved in the “December Showdown” supporting players competing in U12-18 National Tennis Championships and Australian Open wildcard playoff, held at Melbourne Park over two weeks prior to New Year.
In January, Amy travelled to Traralgon as physiotherapist for the “warm up tournament” for the Australian Open Juniors. It was challenging working with young players from around the world with limited English, playing in unfamiliar severe heat conditions (over 40C most days); so hydration and fatigue were key concerns, with Amy treating the world top ranked junior players during the tournament.
Later in January, Amy Shipperd was part of the physiotherapy team at the Australian Tennis Championships, her third consecutive year working with players with intellectual impairments. Again the key challenge in 40 degree plus was weather was player health and welfare, including hydration.
Amy treated both Men’s Singles finalists and Women’s Singles champion numerous time across the week.
And the busy schedule of tennis physiotherapy will continue into 2019, as Amy Shipperd has recently commenced working with the Australian Deaf and Hard of Hearing Tennis team, in an ongoing physiotherapy support capacity.
