Physiotherapist Jack Mason recently worked at the Australian Junior Volleyball Championships on the Gold Coast providing his physiotherapy and recovery expertise to the Victorian Boys and Girls U15, U17 and U19 teams.

With the largest number of teams at the Championships, 170 athletes represented Victoria across seventeen (17) Victorian teams. Each team initially played a minimum of two Volleyball matches per day over the group stages, with games scheduled from 8am and the last games finishing around 11pm in the evening.

Hosted at the Coomera Indoor Sports Centre, which has been built for the 2018 Commonwealth Games, the 6-day event proved very challenging for Jack and two other health-care team members.

At one point we had 30% of our athletes requiring treatment and/or ongoing taping/management. Thankfully there were no serious injuries, with a sprained ankle and minor hamstring strain the worst of it” said Jack. “However recovery and management for young athletes is critical for optimum performance, so it was challenging given the heavy training and match scheduling, but really rewarding working with the Victorian squad, who finished the event with three (3) silver and two (2) bronze medals” added Jack.

Team members at Physioworks Health Group are regularly involved in providing physiotherapy and allied health-care support to elite sporting teams and events, from AFL cricket, netball and volleyball to the recent 2016 Paralympic Games.
